Following the success of the South Africa regional theme of the 2005 Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival in March, the IWFS Vancouver Chapter enjoyed a well-attended five course South African dinner with Laurel Keenan, representing Wines of South Africa, and Mr. Christopher Meyer, Honorary Consul, in attendance. The dinner was at Parkside Restaurant under the inspired guidance of Chef Andrey Durbach. After a reception and introductions, the dinner included a first course of Spice-Crusted Ostrich Carpaccio followed by Piri Piri Prawns, Mixed Braaivleis and Melktart with Cape Gooseberries. Wines presented by Darryl Weinbren of Winebren Wines Inc. included Van Loveren Papillon Brut, 2004 Semillon and 2004 Sauvignon Blanc; a 2004 Danie de Wet Sur Lie Chardonnay; Beyerskloof 2002 Pinotage Rosé and 2001 Synergy Cape Blend; Man Vintners 2003 Sénga Merlot/Cabernet; and an incredible 1953 KWV Muscadel Jerepigo to finish! The evening was a delightful exploration of the cuisine and wines of South Africa .
