The Vancouver Branch of the IWFS seems to be setting a tradition of summer visits to the farms and vineyards where our local fine foods and wines are produced. We have met many interesting and passionate people and this year our visit to the Abbotsford area of the Fraser Valley was no exception. Our day was sunny and hot as we left for Donnachaidh Farms, one of several “Reid Brothers” farms in the area. Brad Reid showed us how they produce organic chickens for market and spoke passionately about his belief in organic farming. We also met a few of his young pigs and left with boxes of organic eggs with their deep golden yolks.

At Lotusland Vineyards, owner Liz Avery showed us the winery and vineyards which now include several newly planted varietals that are replacing their traditional merlot and pinot noir. After a tasting, we enjoyed a fine “al fresco” lunch from Abbottsford’s Restaurant 62. Next stop was Birchwood Dairy where we met the Holstein cows and a one hour old calf, then enjoyed a delicious and cooling ice cream.

Our last stop of the day was at Casa Blanca Farm where we enjoyed the gracious hospitality of Ross and Marlene Dalpre and their daughter. After a walk through their organic farm, with tastes of gooseberries, blackberries, raspberries and apples, we enjoyed a relaxing glass of fruit juice and freshly baked scones and home made jams – a perfect way to finish a hot and enjoyable day!
